Have you wondered about the potential benefits of CBD for pets?

Well we are happy to report that the Endocannabinoid System (ECS), that was discovered in humans in the 1990's, functions just the same way in people as it does in dogs, cats, and other animals.

There are many reported therapeutic benefits to CBD oil that include relief from arthritis, seizures, inflammation, anxiety, nausea, phobias and pain (1)(2). Cannabidiol (CBD) is such an amazing compound, that many studies have revealed its enormous benefits for a wide range of diverse ailments and it has even been proven to be safe for children at the right dose (3).

So yes, CBD oil for pets is beneficial for many conditions, however, there are a few important factors to take into consideration, like what type of pet it is, the correct dosage and the best form of CBD for your pet to ingest.

It is also crucial that you choose the best quality CBD oil products for them and that means buying organic CBD oil.

So if you have been asking any of these questions, then take a look at our guide below which we have put together to help you make the best decisions for your furry friend.

You will learn more about the benefits of CBD for pets, how to select the best type and quality of CBD products, how to administer the appropriate dosage and how to protect your pet from ingesting fake CBD products.

Is CBD Oil Safe For Pets?

CBD is an excellent alternative for pain, anxiety and inflammation because it works synergistically with your body and is non-addictive. (4)

However, your veterinarian may not yet recommend CBD products because the FDA and other regulatory bodies have not approved its use for pets.

Nevertheless, many published research papers show that CBD is safe for our pets such as cats, dogs and horses and pretty much any other mammal (see our reference section at the end of the article). (6)

One thing to keep in mind is that for dogs – it is essential that you choose a high quality CBD oil that is produced from organic hemp and that contains zero to very low trace amounts of the psychoactive component THC. This is because:

dogs possess more cannabinoid receptors (CB1) in the brain than humans and for this reason are extremely sensitive to the potentially toxic effects of THC. (7)

Fortunately the best organic CBD oil for dogs has zero or only trace amounts of THC.

Care needs to be taken, however, as there are hundreds of brands to choose from and not all are high quality and pure products.

It is also important to keep an eye out for artificial ingredients like Xylitol (a sweetener), which is toxic for animals.

Benefits of CBD Oil for Pets

We share many similar ailments to our pets and inflammation is the underlying cause in most cases.

Our pets are also likely to benefit from those amazing anti-inflammatory properties that we love about CBD. More research is still needed, but many studies have already shown tremendous benefits.

One study from 2018 on dogs, shows that it can induce anti-inflammatory and anti-pain properties in dogs with osteoarthritis. (7)

Another study in 2019, shows that epileptic dogs may have fewer seizures when administered CBD besides their seizure medication. (8)

And a 2019 study on horses, demonstrated that CBD has a positive effect on pain management in horses.

Other therapeutic benefits may include relief from anxiety, nausea and phobias.

CBD Oil Dosage for Pets

Research has also shown that CBD oil (an oil-based vehicle) delivered in food may be more effective than powder form in a capsule for dogs. (9) Confirmatory studies are required however.

When it comes to the right dosage of CBD oil, the problem is that different brands recommend different ways of measuring the medication due to the concentration of CBD in the product.

CBD oil for pets can also come in different forms such as capsules, tincture, treats etc.

Bigger animals usually have a higher tolerance level, but you should be particularly careful when administering CBD to small animals such as dogs and cats.

It's advisable to consult with your vet first regarding dosage and always follow the instructions on the product label.

Start with a small dose, monitor your pets reaction and then increase gradually over time….

Dosages are generally:

  • 1-2 milligrams of CBD per day for pets under 10 pounds of body weight
  • 2-4 milligrams of CBD per day for pets between 10-30 pounds of body weight
  • 4-6 milligrams of CBD per day for pets between 30-60 pounds of body weight
  • 6-8 milligrams of CBD per day for pets over 60 pounds of body weight

To control pain, CBD oil for a dog is generally administered once every 8 hours. For other uses, once or twice a day has been advised.

If your pet exhibits symptoms like vomiting, dripping urine, loss of balance, lethargy, or excessive panting, chances are they have consumed too much. If this happens, you can talk to your veterinarian as they can help you figure out your next steps.

The Wrap

Pets have an Endocannabinoid System just like we do and this means that they can benefit from the therapeutic effects of cannabidiol (CBD) as well.

Research is still in its early stages but there have been many published scientific papers that document the benefits of CBD oil for pets such as dogs, cats and horses.

If you think your pet could benefit from CBD, talk to your veterinarian about introducing CBD as a dietary supplement.
